Sleepiness and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (OSAS)2021-05-03T14:35:23+01:00

There is a fundamental distinction to be made between Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) Vs. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (OSAS [1]). Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a condition in which there is a repetitive partial or complete collapse of the pharynx during sleep.

OSA associated with excessive daytime sleepiness is commonly called obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). For obvious reasons OSAS is more dangerous with potentially fatal consequences for the patient but also others around us if we are controlling vehicles, machinery etc..

If you suspect that you may have OSAS then please consider avoiding driving or any other activity that could potentially put you or others at risk of harm if/ when tired. At least until your situation, please discuss this with your GP and/ or sleep service.

[1] Sometimes termed Obstructive Sleep Apnoea / Hypopnoea Syndrome (OSAHS)
